How We Can Take Action: Hunger Hits Home

Hunger Hits Home is a documentary that delves into the intricacies of battling childhood hunger in America through the perspective of parents, children, educators and politicians.
By: Kelsey Vala
My relationship with food changed when I went to Ghana a couple years ago and worked at a non-governmental organization at Buduburam Refugee Camp.  Every day I witnessed hunger, as the United Nations had just stopped handing out food rations only a few months before.  I became fully immersed in this culture that is all too often only on the margins of our minds, our thoughts and our prayers.  Since coming back home, I realized that if we can't eradicate hunger even in America, then how can we help those in countries abroad?

We don't often want to talk about hunger on the home front, but when it comes to food insecurity and malnourishment, the most vulnerable population is our nation's children. With 16 million children in America at risk of hunger, it's time to take action and bring hope for change.

On Sunday, September 16, at 8pm ET on Cooking Channel, Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry Campaign presents Hunger Hits Home, a documentary that delves into the intricacies of battling childhood hunger in America through the perspective of parents, children, educators and politicians. Though we strive to bring fun and excitement to the kitchen, it is time we also turn to the more serious economic, political and social issues facing hunger at home.

Find out how you can help support the cause by dining out at participating restaurants and inviting friends over for a viewing and discussion of the documentary.

Tune into Hunger Hits Home Sunday, September 16, at 8pm ET on Cooking Channel.
