The fast-food breakfast sandwich has been around for decades, but in today’s world of marketing gimmicks, fast-food spots are figuring out new ways to stand out from the crowd. Here are six good and not-so-good takes on the quick, easy morning staple.

The people who brought you Doritos Locos Tacos are back at it with their new Waffle Taco for breakfast –– a slightly sloppy, syrup-infused waffle folded to hold eggs, cheese and sausage or bacon. For a more filling and full-bodied taste of the “border” for breakfast, try the humble A.M. Crunchwrap (pictured), which is filled with eggs, cheese, meat and hash browns.

Carl's Jr.'s Breakfast Burger

If any fast-food joint knows how to bridge the gap between breakfast and lunch, it’s Carl’s Jr. Their monstrous Breakfast Burger not only puts a breakfast platter of eggs, bacon, cheese and hash brown nuggets inside a bun, but a hamburger patty with ketchup as well. It’s the perfect way to start the day — especially if it’s a hung-over day.

McDonald’s McGriddles

The McGriddles were born in 2003, after the folks in the Golden Arches’ kitchen came to the realization that they could take the components of the Big Breakfast with Hotcakes and make them into a sandwich. Skeptics thought sandwiching eggs, cheese and sausage between flapjacks the size of English muffins wouldn’t last, but they were wrong.

Burger King's French Toast Sticks

Realistically, these four-inch sticks of deep-fried, batter-coated bread are merely vehicles for transferring pancake syrup from a little cup into your mouth. If that’s how you do breakfast, you’ll love it. Alternatively, you could probably just down the cup of syrup like a shot of tequila.

7-Eleven’s Stuffed Hash Browns (and Breakfast Empanadas)

While Burger King serves their hash browns as nuggets and McDonald’s sticks to their classic latke-like potato patty, 7-Eleven takes it up a notch, stuffing theirs with egg, cheese and bacon bits. The result is a bit too eggy and greasy, but it beats the doughy, floury hit of the Breakfast Empanada Bites (pictured).

Dunkin’ Donuts’ Eggs Benedict Sandwich

When it comes to this sandwich-ified take on classic eggs Benedict, the folks at Dunkin’ should stick to donuts. The eggs are not poached — nor is their simulation of it even close — and the hollandaise sauce is more like mayonnaise. Instead, get their Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich, served on their namesake pastry.
