This recipe definitely has a good structure, but in my opinion it needed a lot of help to give it that extra something. After the beef portion had simmered, I tasted it and was not impressed. I opened the fridge and got creative, and added about 3 tbsp of maple syrup. That's the trick! The sweetness of the syrup was a perfect balance to the savory flavors. For the mashed potatoes/parsnips, I added 1 cup of leftover grated pepper jack cheese. YUM! The spicy kick combined with the salty/sweet goulash was great. With these alterations, this recipe gets 5 stars!

I found this more interesting than the usual Shepherd's pie -- the paprika gave it a nice flavor. Even though I am not a huge, over-the-top Spanish paprika fan, I could imagine making this one again.
