We set out to replicate the flavor of the long-lost pre-Prohibition-era maraschino cherry.

The Cherry On Top?

Setting the Scene

Before he knew it, cherries were crowding recipe developer Jonathan Milder out of his workspace.

Top Tip

Pit the cherries before macerating them. A cherry pitter makes quick work of this task.

Pack Your Pantry

Here are the flavor components you'll need: maraschino liqueur, sweet cherries, orange zest and almond extract

Fluid Motion

Stir together the heavy syrup, liqueur and almond extract and pour the mixture over the cherries.

Have a Ball

Pack the cherries into a pint jar.

Mix and Match

This was the test lab: jars with varying ratios of ingredients and other variables.

The End Result

These boozy and bracing maraschinos are perfect for adults.

A Good Garnish

They're perfect for topping a Manhattan...

Cherry Red

...or eat them on their own. We won't judge.
