Thank you cloudsky01. Your comment made all the difference with this cake. After I refrigerated it, the cake texture was good, it was not overly sweet. Even my husband liked it, and he is not a chocolate person.

A good chocolate cake. The buttercream was WAY too runny though. I was intrigued by the method--basically making a confectioner's glaze and then adding chocolate and butter, since I had never since a frosting made quite this way. Unfortunately it was way too much water and the frosting was really thin and drippy. So I refrigerated the cake and the leftover frosting that I couldn't get to go on cake and once everything firmed up a bit, I finished frosting the cake and stored in fridge and it is delicious cold! But if I were an inexperienced baker, I probably would have given up on how ugly it looked with the drippy frosting!
