A bluefin tuna was recently auctioned off for the magnificent sum of $1.76 million at an auction in Tokyo, Japan. Environmentalists have been warning that stores of the majestic fish are rapidly being depleted, so consider this a sober reminder of that fact.
The 489-pound tuna, which was caught on the southeast coast of Japan, was the star of the show at last Saturday’s Tsujiki fish market auction. The previous record holder was also a bluefin tuna, but fetched only 1/3 the price of this one. The nearly $2 million asking price works out to a stunning 700,000 yen per kilogram, or $3,603 per pound. And yes, in case you were wondering, it is sushi grade.
