G. Garvin's Louisville Travel Tips
There is much more to Louisville than you’d think. Besides college sports and the Kentucky Derby, this city is filled with locals who love their city. There are farms minutes from downtown, making the restaurant scene locally and seasonally driven. Give Louisville a shot in the summer or fall to avoid the crowds, and secure a spot at an upscale establishment that you’d miss during Derby Week.
This spot is right next to Slugger Field. Against the Grain is great to visit after you’ve worked up an appetite. This gastropub boasts a gigantic beer menu that’s constantly changing and offering something you’ve never had before. The flavorful dishes complement the beer, cocktails and bourbon (of course).
This is the perfect place to bring a date for a romantic and delicious dinner. The restaurant takes its namesake to heart with a pork-centered menu. If you’re looking for smaller plates, the bar upstairs provides a great atmosphere with meat tastings and sexy cocktails.
Chef Edward Lee is doing really special things at his restaurant that I felt needed showcasing. His Asian influence on Southern dining creates unlikely but delicious flavors. He’s got a great relationship with local farmers, which makes all the difference in his seasonal dishes.
Who doesn’t love a classic diner? I had a great time at Burger Boy Diner with the locals. It’s a great way to get to know the town, and that cinnamon raisin bread French toast is going to be something I’ll be making at home with my daughter.
The guys at Hammerheads are young and unstoppable. I had to make sure to visit them before they take over the city. Their place is always packed, and after I tasted the Pork Belly BLT, I could see why. The neighborhood of Germantown is definitely a well-kept secret.
I had a fantastic evening at The Rudyard Kipling. There is a lot of heart in this big space, and it is definitely a great spot for the locals. I got a great warm welcome, some tasty burgoo and a fun show. It definitely makes it worth stopping in Old Louisville.
