5 Awesome Halloween Cocktails
It’s a spooktacular time of year — around a shadowy corner, in a moonlit orchard or down a leaf-littered path in the dark, a spirit might overtake you! Or you could just sit at home and have a spirit overtake you via a boozy beverage. Might we suggest one of these five creepy libations? They’re eerie and mysterious and sure to send icy chills to your bones, particularly if you spill them down your pants. Don’t do that. But drink up and happy, happy Halloween.
Bitters, blood orange and vodka poured from a skull: the perfect punch for the brain-eating, cocktail-swilling undead in all of us. Don’t miss the video footage of us dressed like bloodthirsty corpses in prom dresses.
In a large punch bowl filled with ice, pour the vodka, Triple Sec, bitters, blood orange juice and black cherry soda. Laugh as though you are an evil zombie and stir. Rim each glass with grenadine before filling with punch mixture, and serve. Stagger around menacingly, and threaten to eat strangers' brains. (Yield: 10 servings.)
Flesh soaked in spirits plus a whole tomato pulverized to a pulp together create a Bloody, Bloody Mary with a carnivorous twist. Sure, we call this one a chipper “Beefy Tomato” when we serve it at brunch the rest of the year, but throughout the month of October, let’s all agree to rename it [cue organ music] the Flesh and Blooood. Bonus: Watch the how-to video here.
In a blender, add the booze, tomato, celery salt and horseradish; blend until smooth while laughing like an evil maniac. Pour over ice into a frosty Mason jar and garnish by placing a large piece of jerky in the glass. Note: To infuse tequila with jerky flavor, soak jerky in the liquor for at least an hour, though several days is best. (Yield: 2 servings.)
This brand-new seasonal Alie & Georgia cocktail is scary delicious. One sip and you’ll stagger around, forever possessed by the memory of how perfectly pumpkin, booze, maple syrup and ice cream combine. Watch out. You’ll never be the same.
Add the ice cream, pumpkin, bourbon, half-and-half, maple syrup and pumpkin pie spice to a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and sprinkle with a pinch of crushed cloves for aroma. Sip. Feel joy. Give thanks that bikini season is six months away. (Yield: 2 servings.)
We made this black-as-night licorice elixir specifically for our good pal Giada De Laurentiis, who featured it this month in her brand-new digital weekly magazine, Giada. Made from a few simple at-home bar staples and rimmed with a little sugar, this drink is for all the goblins who like their cocktails as deep and dark as their souls.
In a shaker, combine the first three ingredients, then add ice and shake for 15-30 seconds, until the cocktail is well-chilled. Garnish glass by wetting the rim with a little water and dipping into a dish with orange sugar. Toast to black licorice being the underdog of the candy bowl. (Yield: 1 serving.)
Now, a scary drink roundup wouldn’t be complete without a Long Island iced tea. Why is this drink such a harbinger of horrors? Because there’s enough booze in one of these bad boys to bring the weak to their knees — or early graves. Or worse, it could lead to regrettable incidents like bad karaoke or impulsive tattoos that will haunt you for the rest of your days. Now that’s truly terrifying.
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour the vodka, gin, rum, tequila, Triple Sec and lemon juice into the shaker. Cover and shake vigorously to combine and chill. Pour the mixture, ice and all, into 2 glasses or beer mugs and top off with the cola. Garnish with lemon wedges. Serve. Regret. (Yield: 2 servings.)
