I’m calling for a resurgence of the screwdriver, the morning-appropriate cocktail that’s a simple mixture of orange juice and vodka. With just a bit of creative mixology, you can elevate the lowly screwdriver from an afterthought on your brunch spread to the perfect partner for your frittata or eggs benedict.
Just muddle together orange slices, lemon juice and a pinch of salt to bruise the orange peel and release the oils and juicy pulp. Mix this aromatic garnish with the chilled vodka and orange juice, and you have yourself a clever take on this familiar beverage.
And you thought the only brunch-worthy cocktail was a mimosa.
- 2 oranges, washed and cut into 1/4-inch thick rounds
- 1 lemon, juiced
- Pinch kosher salt
- 16 ounces chilled vodka
- 5 cups chilled orange juice
- 1 cup crushed ice
Put the orange slices into a durable bowl and add the lemon juice and the pinch of salt. Use a wooden spoon to "bruise" the orange slices so that the oil in the peels emerges and the pulp from the orange mixes with the lemon juice. Add the vodka and continue to stir. Add the orange juice and combine well.
Divide the ice among 8 glasses and pour in the drink mixture. Serve immediately.
