Ingredients

6 to 8 medium Granny Smith apples, cored and sliced

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1/2 cup light brown sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Pinch salt

Pinch ground nutmeg

Dash ground cloves

One 9-inch unbaked pie shell, plus dough for lattice or double crust top

1 egg, lightly beaten

Directions

  1. Adjust the rack to the middle of the oven and preheat to 425 degrees F.
  2. Place the apples, cornstarch, sugar, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg and cloves in a bowl and mix well, making sure the apples are well coated. Place in a 9 by 13-inch pan and bake about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven, stir and let cool at room temperature.
  3. Adjust the oven temperature to 350 degrees F.
  4. Fill the pie shell with the apple filling. Top with a lattice or double crust top. Brush lightly with the egg wash. Bake until golden brown, about 40 minutes. Let cool, serve and enjoy.
