Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Hawaiian bread (Portuguese sweet bread)
  • Canola oil, for frying
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half
  • 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Pinch salt
  • Syrup, for serving

Directions

Cut the bread into 2-by-4-by-1/2-inch sticks and dry for at least 2 hours or overnight. Heat the oil in a fryer to 350 degrees F. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon, vanilla, baking powder and nutmeg until all the ingredients are incorporated and the batter is fluffy. In another bowl, mix together the flour, remaining 2 teaspoons cinnamon, sugar and salt. Dip the bread into the batter and then into the flour mixture. Fry about 2 minutes per side. Serve with syrup of choice.
