Jeera (Cumin) Rice

1 cup basmati rice

1 teaspoon oil or butter

1 teaspoon whole cumin seeds

1/2 teaspoon salt


  1. Rinse the rice thoroughly in running water. Drain the rice and set it aside.
  2. In a pot, heat the oil over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add in the cumin seeds. When the seeds sizzle and change color, add in the rice and saute it in the oil for a few minutes. Add in the salt and 2 cups water, then cover the pot. Cook the rice over medium heat until all of the water is absorbed.
  3. Fluff the rice with a fork when it is done and serve hot.
