Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs 
  • 1 cup ketchup 
  • 3 tablespoons sugar 
  • 1 small onion, chopped 
  • 1 green pepper, chopped 
  • 1 packet dried onion soup mix 
  • One 8-ounce can tomato sauce 
  • Salt
  • Flour, for dusting

Directions

Special equipment: Loaf pan

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large bowl mix the beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, 2 tablespoons of the sugar, the onions, peppers, soup mix, tomato sauce and some salt. Mix by hand for at least 10 minutes.

In a small bowl combine the remaining 1/2 cup ketchup, 1 tablespoon sugar and 2 tablespoons water.

Dust the counter with flour. Place the mixture on top of the flour, and knead for 3 minutes. Then form the mixture into a loaf and place into an ungreased loaf pan. Top with half of the ketchup mixture.

Bake uncovered for 30 minutes, then top with the remaining ketchup mixture. Continue to bake for an additional 30 minutes.

Let the loaf rest, then remove from the pan and place on a platter to serve.
