Tempura Giardiniera

1 egg yolk

2/3 cup ice-cold water

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup rice flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Vegetable oil, for frying

One 16-ounce jar Italian mix giardiniera

1 1/2 tablespoons Japanese rice seasoning, such as Ebi Fumi Furikake

Black sesame seeds


  1. Beat the egg yolk in a mixing bowl, and then mix in the ice water, being careful not to drop the ice in. Mix together the flours, baking powder and salt in another bowl using your hands, and then mix into the egg and water mix. It should be slightly lumpy.
  2. Heat oil to 360 degrees F. 
  3. Drain the giardiniera in a colander. Add the rice seasoning into the batter and dip the veggies in. Fry the veggies, a few at a time, until light brown and crispy, 2 to 3 minutes. Drain on paper towels. 
  4. Garnish with black sesame seeds.
