Mashed Potatoes:
  • 2 pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes
  • 1/4 cup milk, warmed 
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 
  • Salt 
Crab Salad:
  • 6 ounces imitation crab (good quality, not frozen)
  • 9 tablespoons mayonnaise 
  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh dill 
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onions 
  • 1 tablespoon creme fraiche or sour creme 
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard 
Swedish Grillkrydda:
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 4 good quality all-beef hot dogs
  • Unsalted butter, for spreading 
  • 4 pieces soft thin Swedish bread or other wrapping bread (see Cook's Note)
  • 4 tablespoons crunchy fried onions


For the mashed potatoes: Peel the potatoes and boil them a large pot of water until cooked through. Drain and mash the potatoes with a masher. Add the milk and butter and mash until smooth. Season with salt.

For the crab salad: Chop the crab finely. Mix with the mayonnaise, dill, red onions, creme fraiche, cayenne and mustard in a large bowl.

For the Swedish grillkrydda: Combine the paprika, salt, pepper, cumin, garlic and thyme in a small bowl.

Heat a flattop or grill pan to medium heat. Grill the hot dogs until golden. Butter the bread and grill it until warm.

To serve: Put 3 tablespoons of mashed potatoes on each bread. Season with some of the Swedish grillkrydda. Add the hot dog, 2 tablespoons crab salad and 1 tablespoon fried onions. Roll it together and enjoy!

Cook's Note

You can find Swedish bread at Ikea. Or you may substitute any kind of wrapping bread, but you won't have the great taste of anise and fennel.
