Combine the sugar, 3/4 cup water and the flavoring ingredients of your choice in a small saucepan. Bring the mixture to a simmer, lightly muddling the solids and stirring until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat and let stand until cool before straining.
For the raspberry syrup, allow the mixture to simmer briskly an additional 3 minutes before removing from the heat.
