Southern Bread Pudding with Comfort Sauce

2 loaves day-old French bread

8 cups milk

2 cups raisins

1 dozen eggs (slightly beaten)

4 cups sugar

1 cup melted butter

4 Tbs. vanilla

8 tsp. ground cinnamon

Comfort Sauce (recipe follows)

Comfort Sauce (yield: 2 cups):

1 cup butter

2 cups sugar

4 egg yolks

8 Tbs. water

Southern Comfort bourbon (to taste) 


  1. BREAD PUDDING: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Break bread into small pieces (about one-inch chunks). Combine bread, milk and raisins. Allow to soak until well softened (about 15 minutes). Beat together eggs, sugar, melted butter, vanilla and cinnamon and stir into bread mixture until well blended. Turn mixture into a baking pan at least two inches deep. Bake 40-50 minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean. Serve with warm Comfort Sauce and garnish with a fresh sprig of mint.

Comfort Sauce (yield: 2 cups):

  1. SAUCE: In a small saucepan, melt butter and stir in sugar, egg yolks and water. Cook and stir constantly over medium-low heat for 5-6 minutes or until sugar dissolves and mixture thickens. Remove from heat and stir in Southern Comfort to taste.
